The Verrazzano Day Observance Committee, comprised of members from the Order Sons of Italy in America (Grand Lodge of Rhode Island) and Italian American War Veterans of the United States (Rhode Island division), recently honored Joseph DeSantis, CEO of Tri-Town Community Action Agency and South County Community Action Agency, as its 2015 Man of the Year. “I’m truly honored and deeply humbled to be here this evening,” DeSantis said after receiving an honorary plaque from the previous year’s honoree, Dr. Giulio Diamante.

DeSantis has spent all 43 years of his non-profit career at Tri-Town, earning the title of CEO in 1980 and overseeing the growth of the organization from a budget of $1 million to $13 million. Founded in 1964, the private non-profit community service agency provides a broad range of programs and services to individuals and families in need throughout North, Central and Northwestern Rhode Island.

“Tonight, I call upon all of us to re-dedicate ourselves to our family — not only our relatives, but our American brothers and sisters who arrive in our midst seeking the same support that our ancestors needed to start and build their own lives in America,” he said. “Let us, all of us, take the example of our Italian elders into our hearts and minds and hands, and make life better for others.”
