Boston Investors Eyeing Roma Soccer Team

Francesco Totti, captain of A.S. Roma

Italy’s main sports newspaper, La Gazzetta dello Sport, is reporting that Thomas R. DiBenedetto, president of investment management firm Boston International Group, alongside a partner at New England Sports Ventures, is the lead investor in the discussions currently taking place in New York to buy A.S. Roma, one of the top teams in the Italian Serie A league.

Based on the report, representatives of UniCredit bank, the team’s current owner, have extended their stay in New York to discuss the sale with 61-year-old DiBenedetto, whose family is originally from Salerno. He is a partner of New England Sports Ventures, which is the parent company of the Boston Red Sox and of Liverpool F.C., a British Premier League soccer team.

Other potential investors in the deal are Boston’s Michael A. Ruane, a partner with TA Associates Realty, and venture capitalist Richard D’Amore. Also in the deal might be Arthur Falcone, 51, who works in the housing sector, and Julian Movsesian.

The announcement was met with a positive response on the floor of the Milan stock exchange, as Roma stocks rose four percent on Thursday.
